To get the best finish from your paintwork, it's important to firstly prepare the paintwork properly, and to get products that work particularly well on certain colour cars. This guide will help you to chose the best products for you car, that won't stretch the budget too far (unless you want it to).

Pre-Wash

Spray a citrus degreaser on the lower half on the car. Foam the car using a neutral snow foam. Put 1 inch into the bottle, a drop of car shampoo and fill the rest of the bottle with warm water. Close the venturi to almost fully closed and set the spray to a wide spray pattern and spray the foam onto the car. Leave to dwell for 5 minutes and jetwash off.

Wheels

Use a good quality wheel cleaner such as Meguiars Wheel Brightener or Bilberry. If you're wheels are dark, then use a non-acidic wheel cleaner such as Chemical Guys Premium Blue Wheel Cleaner. Get right in between the wheel spokes and the brakes with an EZ Detail Brush, and use a 1" horsehair brush for the wheel faces. Once clean and dry, seal the wheels using 3 thin coats of Poorboy's World Wheel Sealant. Dress the tyres with Meguiars Endurance High Gloss Tyre Shine, it's cheap, smells good, glosses well and lasts long. For a deeper gloss on the tyres, apply a second coat after 15-20 minutes.

Wash

2 Bucket Method using a genuine Sheepskin/lambswool washmitt and a high sudsing shampoo such as Chemical Guys Maxi Suds II or Meguiars Shampoo Plus. Have one bucket with clear water in, and one with shampoo water in. Dunk the mitt into the shampoo, wash a part of the car (starting from the top down), rinse the mitt in the clear water (run you finger through the pile to free the grit into the bucket), then go back into the shampoo and wash the next section.

Clay

Using either a detailing spray such as Meguiars Quik Detailer or Dodo Juice Born Slippy as a lube, or a home made clay lube of water mixed with a small amount of shampoo. Use a good Polyclay such as the polyclay from cleanyourcar or Sonus Green. For high levels of paint contamination, use an aggressive clay such as Sonus Grey. Only use an aggressive clay if you plan on doing paint correction afterwards as aggressive clay can cause some paint defects.

Dry

Using a waffle weave towel such as a Miracle Dryer or a Sonus Ultimate/Der Wunder Drying . You can also use a detailing spray such as Megs Last Touch as a drying aid. Spray onto the wet panel before wiping with the towel.

Paintwork Correction

Use either a random orbital polisher such as a Porter Cable 7424, Kestral DAS-6 or Meguiars G220, or a rotary such as a Makita, Kestral or Silverline. Use a stiff foam pad such as a Sonus SFX-1 pad, and a good cutting compound such as Menzerna Intensive Polish PO3.02RD, Meguiars #80, 3M Fast Cut Plus or Sonus SFX-1 Restore polish. Follow this with a softer pad such as a Sonus SFX-3 pad and a finer compound such as Meguiars #83 or 3M Ultrafina SE to remove any hologramming and bring the car to a glaze.

For that extra WOW factor

Once you have finished the detail, you can add that extra WOW factor to your car, enhancing the depth, gloss and sparkle. Although pricey, using Zaino Z8 Spray Seal after a detail will make your car stand out from the crowd.

Interior

Hoover the car with a household vacuum cleaner (handheld ones aren't up to scratch). Clean any stain on the fabrics with a household carpet stain remover. Clean all plastics and vinyls with Poorboy's World Natural Look Dressing. Clean & Condition any leather every 6 months using Gliptone Leather Cleaner & Gliptone Leather Conditioner.

Cabriolet Fabric Roof

To get the most out of your fabric roof, use a good quality cleaner and protector. The most commonly used ones are Wolfstein's RAGGTOP products or Auto Glym's Cabriolet Fabric Hood Cleaning Kit.

Applicators & Cloths

Apply polishes and LSPs using a foam applicator pad (you can pick these up for 1 each from cleanyoucar). Buff off with either a microfibre cloth, or a shagpile towel.

Maintenance Washes

It's a common misconception that you need to re polish and wax a car every time you wash. If you build up a few layers of LSP then your protect will last for 3-6months, depending on the LSP. For you maintenace wash, simply pre-wash, wash, rinse and dry. You can either use a detailing spray as a drying aid, or dry first then spray and wipe with the detailing spray. This will restor the finish back to how it was after the detail.
